Caroline is THREE!

Caroline and her new quilt

Caroline turned three today! (Mike turned 35, but that's not quite as exciting, now is it?) We celebrated with Mike's family- Joe and his kids came down from Oshkosh, and we all had dinner at Nana and Papa's house. It was great to have everyone together for their birthdays! And we also celebrated Henry and Owen's birthdays which were in March (they are 3 and 5 now). It was a wonderful time. Caroline got lots of fun gifts, but one of the best was a new quilt for her bed, lovingly sewn by her nana. It is such a fun bunch of colors, with lots of blue- her favorite. Thanks Nana!

So what is Caroline like at three? She is simply precious. She is so loving and adorable. Not that she doesn't have her moments, but don't we all?

She is very energetic- loves to jump and spin and play all the time. She dances around, plays dress up, jumps on the bed (and the couch, the chairs, the floor- there is a lot of jumping and bouncing!). She is pretty artistic- loves coloring and drawing, and is getting good at making recognizable images. Mostly just faces (with legs and arms coming out of them :)), but sometimes rainbows or other things too. She is also still a huge fan of playdoh.

She just started playing real games. She loves (and is great at) Memory. She also likes a game called busytown where you move along a board and have to find objects, a la "Where's waldo". And Cootie is a favorite too. Shoots and Ladders and Candyland seem to lose her attention more quickly than we can finish, but they're still fun. She's starting real puzzles, though not with too many pieces.

She's learning a lot, but it is hard to say why some things stick and others don't. For example, I'd say she knows most of her letters, but can't identify almost any numbers. I just don't know if she has been exposed to them less or what, but it is odd. Especially since she counts great, even in spanish! She has started writing her letters. If you help show her how along the way, she can even write her name. One day at play n learn, she went to "sign in" and wrote the letters "ine". Everyone was impressed.

She is a little bit shy. Especially when she first comes into a setting with other kids or people she doesn't know well, it takes her a few minutes before she's comfortable.

She's pretty independent and will just go do things by herself when you ask her to. But she is still a little clingy to me in particular, and wants help more than she needs it on occasion. Like with the bathroom- sometimes she'll go in, do her business, wipe herself, get dressed again, and wash her hands all by herself. Other times she just wants and claims to "need" help.

She loves her sisters. Now that they are more interactive, she seems a bit more interested. I'm excited to see them all playing together in 6 months or so. But for now, she gives them toys or (more often) takes them away. She touches their faces and says sweet things. She occasionally tells me not to hold or feed a baby- when she really wants attention all to herself, but less than she used to.

At her three year appointment, she was 36.1 inches tall (21%) and 28 lbs 14 oz (30%).
