Bakers dozen

So what is Caroline up to at 13 months?

Gettin' sassy at bath time!
Swinging like mad
Chomping her peas

She's fun as ever- just a ball of joy that brightens every day. She's full of smiles and eager to please. She's still fearless and outgoing, eager to meet anyone new. She loves to play- we just got a big batch of birthday toys from Oma and she's been going crazy for more little balls and electronic noise-making toys of all sorts. She also loves being outside and since the weather has warmed up, we've been doing more of that lately. She'll walk around the sand and grass, picking up and eating lots of things she shouldn't. She goes on the swings and the slide and seems to enjoy herself.

She's a great walker now- pretty steady on her feet, and only falling once in a while. Like when she climbs up the step of the fireplace and then divebombs off to the floor below. She is remarkably good at recovering from these types of tumbles, and only cries once in a while when she really gets a good whack. One day she was trying to climb from the couch to the coffee table. The coffee table has a rough stone top, so I was trying to dissuade her from this activity. Anyways, her hand slipped and she went face-first into the stone. She cut the outside of her lip/chin area as well as the inside of her lip, so I was convinced at first that her bottom tooth went all the way through the skin. But it wasn't bleeding too bad and she calmed down after about 5 minutes, so we figured out she had just cut both sides. She also bangs her head on the underside of tables and chairs pretty often, because she now refuses to crawl, even when she really should sometimes. She's just starting to run, which, frankly, I'd be happy if she waited on starting. But so it goes...

She isn't going crazy on the talking, but I hope she will soon. She's learned a couple of new words that she seems to be using at the appropriate times: "Hi" and "Yeah". Otherwise its still just mostly mama and dada. I think she might be getting "up" too, but early to say. She's certainly very good at communicating her wants otherwise- pointing to things, pushing them away when she doesn't want them, etc. She's also learned that if you go slack in your shoulders when someone is picking you up that it is harder for them to get you. This is her favorite new trick and it is a bit annoying because I'll just lose my grasp on her and she'll almost fall.

She likes to dance- any time music comes on. Amusingly, if I'm watching Ellen in the morning, she'll get up and dance along with Ellen. Caroline's dance moves include bending her knees so she bops up and down and an occasional arm shake or two. Her friend Casey was over the other day and she was dancing too- just swaying side to side. They are funny together.
She's doing OK on eating. It still depends a lot on her mood, moreso than what we're feeding her. She seems to eat most anything- she's particularly fond of strawberries these days. She's still drinking more milk than we'd like and we're trying to wean her off the bottle. Fortunately she's getting more used to the sippy cup, so we're moving in the right direction at least.

She is big into hugging, but seems to have gotten over her kissing phase, since when I ask her for kisses she is reluctant to perform. But she often just comes over and snugs with us, which is great. She loves being tickled and has the most adorable little laugh. She also laughs when we make funny faces or just goof off with her.
