Sugar baby

My mom arrived on Friday to stay with us for a week or so and celebrate Thanksgiving together. It is wonderful to have her here, taking care of all of us and spoiling us rotten. She came bearing ridiculous amounts of clothes and toys for our little princess and has been buying more nonstop since she arrived, never mind the groceries and diapers and everything else. Thanks mom! We'll think of you every time we change that dirty bum ;)

It is also great to have her perspectives on child-rearing. She's rather mellow-yellow about it all, but maybe thats just because of her experience as a pediatrician dealing with all of the high-strung new parents. Mike and I are fairly cautious about what C eats and when she's climbing on things and such. So when she gags on a cheerio, we yank her up and hit her back until she stops choking. Meanwhile, my mom says, "just leave her alone, she'll clear it." And inevitably, she does, with fairly little effort. So now her mellowness is wearing off on us. She'll also let her eat just about anything (except, god forbid, honey, which she keeps reminding us might give her botulism). So now she's eating more solid stuff- like cooked peas and carrots and pieces of bananas. Mom is convinced she just doesn't like baby food and wants the real deal. She does seem more interested in things she can pick up herself, using those rapidly devloping finger skills.

Anyways, this gets to a funny story. My mom picked up some pastries at a bakery, and we were snacking on them after dinner the other night. One had a raspberry filling that we gave Caroline a little taste of. She loved it, of course (quite a sweet tooth on this one). So I gave her a few more bites, with my mom's encouragement. Mike was sitting by, saying "you get to stay up with her if she's up all night from the sugar rush!" Little did we know...

She fell asleep on schedule around 8pm, but then woke up before 9 and was WIDE AWAKE for the next 3 hours. She was all happy and giggly and making funny noises. But not going to sleep. Not even vaguely drowsy. We've never seen anything quite like it. It was pretty funny at first, but then we wanted to sleep ourselves and it wasn't so funny anymore. Like having a newborn all over again.

So that was our sugar baby. No more of that, Oma.

Oh my goodness, Maddy, where have I been. Last time I checked your blog Caroline was a little baby and suddenly she is a much bigger baby- I can really see her big girl face and she has such fantastic expressions. Amazing. You two also look fantastic! xxoo Becca
